Market Capitalization of all 24 Listed Public Sector Banks below that of 15 Listed Private Banks

The combined market capitalization of all 24 listed public sector banks, which control 73% of bank deposits,is currently below that of the 15 listed private banks.

On 15 November 2011, the combined market capitalization of the 24 public sector banks which include 19 nationalized banks, SBI and its three associates and IDBI was Rs 311877 crore. As against this, the market capitalization of 14 private banks was Rs 321613 crore. This is a reversal of the position at the beginning of 2011. As on 1 April 2011, the total mkt-cap of government-owned banks was Rs 439600 crore much higher than the Rs 374218 crore for private banks.

As on end-June 2011,PSU banks accounted for 74.6% of bank deposits while private sector banks had only 18%,with the rest of the funds lying with regional rural banks and foreign banks. In matters of credit, PSU banks account for 74.9% of bank loans in the country while private banks have only a 17.6% share.

Two bad quarters of 2011-12 for State Bank of India and reports of loan restructuring and NPA worries in public sector banks hit valuations hard.

HDFC Bank overtook SBI to become the most valuable bank in the country.Incidentally,SBI the largest lender in the country has contributed the most to the decline in value of public sector banks.

PSU banks can work around capital constraints in the short-term by consolidation or via a relaxation in norms that require the government to hold a minimum 51% stake. There also exists larger social burden on the public sector banks because of which they have had to restructure large loans. Compared to them the private banks have been selective in their lending and have had far fewer NPAs.

Ghaziabad ranked Second Fastest Growing City in the World after China’s Beihai

According to a survey conducted by the City Mayors Foundation, an global think tank on urban affairs, there are 37 Indian cities among the world's 300 fastest growing urban centres. The Indian city of Ghaziabad is the second fastest growing city in the world. The general parameter used to consider the growth of a city is the rate of its urbanization.

According to the report- The Transition to a Predominantly Urban World and its Underpinnings released by International Institute for Environment and Development, eleven cities in India are amongst the 100 fastest growing cities of the world. The 11 cities in the list of 100 fastest growing cities are- Durg – Bhilai, Ghaziabad, Aurangabad, Bhopal, Chandigarh, Guwahati, Surat, Asansol, Dhanbad, Visakhapatnam, Faridabad. India is second to only China in this growth race.

The economic boom has been a catalyst for the fast-track development across India. India's development was observed to have shifted from the big metropolitan cities to the smaller cities where the cost of living is much lower and the quality of life far better. The boom in the small cities is evident with these cities offering better infrastructure, better work-life balance and lucrative jobs. The speedy growth in the smaller cities are attributed to education, reduction in poverty, industrialization, IT boom, and improved health services.

The Survey

The tables prepared during the survey assumed annual growth rates for cities and urban areas between 2006 and 2020. The assumptions are based on past growth/decline and forecasts by international and national statistics organisations. The reserch in this field revealed that most of the countries growing at a fast pace are the middle or low-income nations. none of the European cities feature in the list of 100 fastest growing cities. The urban population in Africa was found to exceed the urban population of North America.

Beihai in China is the fastest growing city in the world, with a population growth rate of 10.58 per cent, says the survey.

The five fastest growing cities in the world are- Beihei (China), Ghaziabad (India), Sana (Yemen), Surat (India) and Kabul (Afghanistan).

Union Cabinet Nod for 26% Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in Pension Sector

The Union Cabinet on 16 November 2011 agreed to partially allow foreign direct investment (FDI) to enter the pension sector to the extent of 26 per cent, as is now available in the area of insurance. The cabinet however refused to mention any sectoral cap in the proposed legislation.

In its approval to amendments in the PFRDA Bill, 2011, the Cabinet turned down the Parliamentary Standing Committee's suggestion of providing a guarantee on assured returns on pension fund schemes. The provision with regard to the FDI cap for the pension sector was proposed to be incorporated in the regulations once the Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill, 2011, is enacted.

Though the government is of the view that the FDI cap in the pension (sector) should be at 26 per cent, on a par with the insurance sector, it would like to retain the flexibility of changing the cap of FDI as and when required.

Pension Fund Regulatory and Development Authority Bill

The proposed legislation introduced in the Lok Sabha on 24 March 2011 was subsequently referred to the Standing Committee chaired by BJP leader and former Finance Minister Yashwant Sinha for scrutiny. In its suggestions, the committee wanted the government not only to specify the FDI cap in the legislation itself but also provide for a minimum guaranteed return to pension subscribers.

With the Cabinet's approval of some of the amendments proposed, the PFRDA Bill, which seeks to open the pension sector to private sector and foreign investment, will be taken up for consideration and passage in the winter session of Parliament.

The Cabinet turned down the committee's suggestion on providing greater flexibility to subscribers on withdrawal of funds from their accounts.

The PFRDA Bill provides for the setting up of a statutory authority to undertake promotional, developmental and regulatory functions with regard to pension funds.

The government decided not to mention the FDI cap in the legislation. The government has also not been able to raise the FDI ceiling in insurance from the existing 26 per cent to 49 per cent as the changes require fresh amendments. As a result, the Insurance (Amendment) Bill has been pending approval since 2008. Once the FDI caps are mentioned in the regulations, it will be easy for the government to modify the ceilings through an executive order, as and when required.

Scientists discovered Sunken Islands that linked India to Australia

Scientists discovered two sunken islands west of Australia, in the Indian Ocean, which once formed part of the last link between India and Australia. The two islands were about the size of Tasmania. They were once part of the supercontinent Gondwana and more than 1.5 kilometres underwater. The islands, called micro continents, were formed when India moved away from Australia, 130 million years ago during the Cretaceous period (when dinosaurs roamed the Earth).

The scientists made the discovery while they were mapping the seafloor of the Perth Abyssal Plain. The data collected on the voyage could help us understand better the process in which India, Australia and Antarctica broke off from Gondwana.
