Pali Rajasthan

Pali, with its glorious historical background, is an important district of Rajasthan expanding its boundaries in South-West to Sirohi district from Ajmer district and Nagour district in North-East. The area of 12,387 Sq. km of pali district is located between 24.45 degree to 26.75 degree North Latitute and 72.48 degree to 74.20 degree East Longitute surrounded by Jodhpur, Jalore, Sirohi, Udaipur, Rajasamand, Ajmer and Nagour districts. National Highway No. 14 links Pali from Delhi in North to Ahmedabad in South.

History

Geologists trace the existence of Pali to pre-historic age and maintain that it has emerged from the vast western sea spread over a large part of the present day Rajasthan. In the Vedic age Maharsi Javali stayed in this area for meditation and interpretation of Vedas. The Pandavas in the Mahabharata age also have made this area (near Bali)  their resting place during the exile. As a part of ancient Arbuda Province, this area was known as Balla-Desh.

Historical relics depict the existence of this area during the Kushana Age, when King Kannishka had conquered Rohat and Jaitaran area, parts of today's Pali district, in 120 AD. Till the end of seventh century A. D. , this area was reigned by the Chalukya King Harshavardhana who also conquered Bhinmal and most of the present area of Rajasthan.
After the Arab invasions of India this area was concentrated by Rajput rulers from all over India. During the period from 10th to 15th century, boundaries of Pali extended to adjoining Mewar, Godwad and Marwar. All Rajput rulers resisted the foreign invaders but individually fought for each other's land and leadership.
After the defeat of Prithvi Raj Chouhan, the great warrior against Mohd. Gauri, the Rajput power of the area was disintegrated and Mewar and Godwad area of Pali become the the subjects of then ruler of Mewar, Maharana Kumbha. But Pali city which was ruled by Brahmin rulers with the patronage of neighbouring Rajput rulers, remained peaceful and progressive.
16th and 17th century saw a number of battles in the surrounding areas of Pali. Shershah suri was defeated by Rajput rulers in the battle of Gini, Mughal emperor Akbar's army had constant battles with Maharana Pratap in Godwad area. Again after the Mughals had conquered almost all of Rajputana, Veer Durga Das Rathore of Marwar made organized efforts to redeem the Marwar area from Aurangzeb, the last Mughal  emperor. By then Pali had become subservient to Rathores of Marwar state. Pali was rehabilitated by Maharaja Vijay Singh and soon it became an important commercial center.
Role in struggle for freedom: Under British rule pali played an important role by pioneering the freedom struggle in Marwar. Various Thakurs of pali under the stewardship of  Thakur of Auwa, who was the most powerful of all, confronted with the British rule. Auwa fort was surrounded by the British army and then confilcts lasted by 5 days, when at last the fort was possessed by the British army. But this heroie action of Auwa paved the way for continued and organised struggle for freedom.

Geography

Karauli rajasthan

Karauli was an erstwhile princely state in eastern Rajasthan. Travel to Karauli and enjoy the lavish, royal lifestyle. It is famous for its pale red stone. Travel to Karauli can be supplemented by the visits to some noted places like the temples of Kaila Devi and Madan Mohanji and other historic monuments. The annual fair at the Kaila Devi temple is quite popular. The ritual of Kanak-Dandoti is observed by staunch devotees and successors of Gholi Bhagat (a devotee of Kaila Devi) where they cover the distance of 15-20 kms to reach the temple by lying level to the ground and moving upwards. Then there are the local bazaars which you could visit to buy exclusive items of handicraft and colorful bangles.

The Bhanwar Vilas palace and City palace have magnificent architecture of colonial style, stone carvings, lattice work and classic paintings.

Location of Karauli in Rajasthan
Karauli is a holy city situated 160 kms from Jaipur earlier called Kalyanpuri after the local deity Kalyanji. Karauli was founded in 1348 AD. It is in close proximity (approximately 23kms) from Kaila Devi temple. The city is surrounded by a wall of red sandstone which has 6 gates and 11 postems.

Fairs and Festivals

In Karauli, one animal fair and two religious fairs are held. The religious fairs are held in March-April and Sept-Oct at the temple of Kaila Devi Ji about 20 kms from Bhanwar Vilas Palace. The details of which are available in the page on Kaila Devi Temple.
The Animal fair is held at Karauli in the month of February every year for a week which coincides with the festival of Shivratri.
This fair is one of the oldest animal fairs of Rajasthan where every year thousands of animals of all kinds are brought for sale/purchase.
Here one can see the trading of animals, the animal owners camping, shops selling colourfull and attractive items for use and decoration of the animals.

At the end of the fair, various competitions are held to judge the outstanding specimens.
Then the animal fair gets converted in a commodity fair where spices, handicrafts items and household goods of all kinds are traded.
Even this part of the fair is no less interesting.

Kaila Devi Fair Karauli

Location: The Kaila Devi temple on the banks of Kalisil river, on the Trikut hills, 2 km from Kaila village, which in turn is 24 km from Karauli district headquarters, Rajasthan.
Significance: It is held in the honor of the deity Kaila Devi ( a form of Mahalakshmi, the goddess of wealth and Chamunda, the goddess of death).
Time of Celebration: In the month of Chaitra (according to the Hindu calendar), for a fortnight starting from 12th day of Chaitra Budi. For fifteen days in March or April.

One of the most venerated fairs of Rajasthan, Kaila devi fair is hels at the temple of Kaila Devi, who is worshipped as the guardian deity by the Yadavas, the Khinchis, and the princess of Karauli. In the courtyard of the temple, there is a small temple of Bhairon and a temple facing the Kaila Devi's shrine houses Lord 'Hanuman', called 'Languriya' in the local dialect. Thousands of devotees belonging to all the communities visit the place throughout the year. The fair attracts a lot of pilgrims from other states also such as Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh , Punjab , Delhi and Haryana, who offer cash, coconuts, kajal (kohl), tikki (vermilion), bangles and sweets to the goddess.

An interesting ritual is observed by the successors of Goli Bhagat, a great devotee of Kaila Devi, who come from Agra. This ritual called 'Kanak-Dandoti' is rigorous and is observed by other staunch devotees as well. These devotees cover a distance of 15 to 20 kms to the temple by lying prostrate and marking lines with their hands in that position, then get up and advance upto the drawn line and again repeating the procedure. Though some devotees do take some rest and eat food in between, but there are some who endure the hunger and exhaustion till they reach the temple. The faith of these people is exemplary.

There are a large number of shops selling variety of articles and Mina tribal people perform dances of happiness and sing songs in the praise of the deities lending the gaiety to the environment.

Kota Rajasthan

The history of the city dates back to the 12th century A.D. when the Hada Chieftain, Rao Deva, conquered the territory and founded Bundi and Hadoti. Later, in the early 17th century AD during the reign of the Mughal Emperor Jahangir, the ruler of Bundi -Rao Ratan Singh, gave the smaller principality of Kota to his son, Madho Singh. Since then Kota became a hallmark of the Rajput gallantry and culture.
The south eastern region of Rajasthan known as Hadoti comprises of Bundi, Baran, Jhalawar and Kota is a treasure of history dating back to several centuries. Prehistoriccaves, paintings, formidable forts and the mighty chambal river hurtling from the Vindhyas are dotted in the region. When Jait Singh of Bundi defeated the Bhil Chieftain Koteya in a battle, he raised the first battlement or the 'Garh'(fort) over his severead head. The Independant state of kota became a reality in 1631 when Rao Madho Singh, the second son of Rao Ratan of Bundi was made the ruler, by the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. Soon Kota outgrew its parent state to become bigger in area, richer in revenue and more powerful. Maharao Bhim Singh played a pivotal role in Kota's history, having held a 'Mansab' of five thousand and being the first in his dynasty to have the title of Maharao. Kota is situated on the banks of chambal river and is fastly emerging as an important industrial centre. It boasts of Asia's largest fertilizer plant, precision instrument unit and atomic power station nearby. Chemicals, fertilizers, synthetic fibres, tyrecord and sophisticated instruments, industry's mainstay, have helped in pushing this ancient city into the forefront of modernisation. Yet memories of its ancient links linger strongly. Present Day Kota owes its foundations to a Kotya Bhil warrior who 800 years ago built a small fortification at akelgarh and put up a protective mud-wall around it all the way to Retwali. In 1580, Rao Madho Singh strenghtened both the fortification and the wall. In time to come, Kota acquired the Hallmark of rajput power as well as culture.
